Students come to the Martial Arts for many reasons – to learn self-defense, to stay fit, to compete in tournaments, and other. At Paks Karate though, the opportunity for fitness, competition, and the acquisition of self-defense skills is there, our emphasis is placed on teaching and learning “The Way.” “The Way” (Do) is an essential part of traditional Martial Arts instruction. In all styles, the study of Martial Arts, though used for self-defense, fitness, and sport, found its greatest development in the ethical and philosophical teachings of “The Way.” The codes of the Hwarang warriors of Korea, the Samurai of Japan, the teachings of Taoism and of the Shaolin monks of China, all focused on principles we in the West have learned from our Judeo-Christian heritage: Responsibility, Respect, Honesty, and Caring. At Paks Karate, Responsibility is emphasized first and foremost. It is both the hardest principle to develop and maintain, and is the most all-encompassing. If we as individuals develop and maintain the self-discipline, courage, and pursuit of excellence necessary to meet our responsibilities to our families, our neighbors, and ourselves, we soon find that we are also acting with Respect, Honesty, and Caring. When we learn that, regardless of what happens to us and how others treat us, we alone are ultimately responsible for all our choices and all we do; we learn that we can make choices that change the world. |
