There is very little difference between Tang Soo Do and Tae Kwon Do. In fact, there are many Tae Kwon Do schools that actually teach traditional Tang Soo Do techniques. Modern Tae Kwon Do (also spelled Taekwondo) is actually a sport and is primarily used for competition. Many of the modern Tae Kwon Do techniques are developed for use in a tournament or competition setting.
Tae Kwon Do was officially recognized by the Korean Government and the Korean Amateur Sports Association in 1962 with the inception of the Korean Taekwondo Union. In 1965 the name changed to the Korean Taekwondo Association. Many demonstrations were given around the world but it wasn’t until 1980 that the International Olympic Committee recognized Taekwondo as an international sport. Demonstrations were given at the 1988 Olympics. Taekwondo made its debut as an official Olympic sport in the 2000 Olympic Games.
Since the techniques of Tang Soo Do and Tae Kwon Do are so similar, it is very easy for a person skilled in Tang Soo Do to adapt the techniques to competition Tae Kwon Do. We offer specialized training classes for our students who wish to compete in a tournament setting.
